Symposium Abstract:  Science is about seeking evidence-based, deeper understandings and it is also deeply political and culturally contingent. This symposium seeks to demonstrate that these statements when understood together can lead to greater insights.

Aligning both with the Five-College “Culture, Health, and Science” (CHS) program and Hampshire’s focus on critical bio-cultural inquiry, presenters will discuss how they engage with the cultures and politics of science, especially in relation to nutrition and health. As part of Alan Goodman’s retirement celebration, presenters will also address Alan’s lifelong work on how poverty, inequality, and racism get under the skin. Presentations will also address how to repel attacks on our values, including science, critical inquiry, reproductive rights, trans people, and democracy. We look forward to a robust discussion with plenty of audience participation.
