Creating Nonfiction: A Career Conversation with Broadcast Journalist P.J. Tobia 96F

Join the Career Options Resource Center and the Office of Alumni and Family Relations for a conversation with Broadcast Journalist P.J. Tobia, 96F. This discussion will focus on ways to make a living as a creator of nonfiction content, whether video, print, or digital. We'll also talk about news-gathering techniques, technology's growing role in this work, and ways to find good stories to tell.

About P.J. Tobia 96F
P.J. is a producer at NBC News, based in Los Angeles. His work mostly appears on “NBC News Now,” a streaming video platform, but he also has worked on stories for “NBC Nightly News,” “The Today Show,” and MSNBC programs. At Hampshire, P.J. studied creative writing and music. His Div. III project was a book of short stories, both fiction and long-form nonfiction, and his music practice focused primarily on production techniques and jazz percussion. Prior to NBC, P.J. produced for “VICE News Tonight” (HBO) and covered foreign affairs and defense for “PBS NewsHour” in Washington, D.C. His areas of coverage include the Middle East, Afghanistan, the U.S. border, immigration, right wing extremism, and the occasional catastrophic hurricane. He shoots, edits, and has appeared as an on-camera and radio correspondent. Prior to his broadcast career, P.J. was a long-form magazine and newspaper writer, and taught journalism at a high school in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood. His work appeared in The Village Voice, Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer and other more-or-less fine publications.
