Hampshire College Theatre Program & Theatre Board present:
Hedwig and the Angry Inch | A Div iii Adaptation
Written by John Cameron Mitchell | Music and Lyrics by Stephen Trask
Directed by Lauryn McGill | Produced by and Starring Tiz Rome as Hedwig
"Hedwig and the Angry Inch", the Obie Award-winning, q*eer-rock musical by John Cameron Mitchell, explores the tumultuous journey of self-proclaimed, 'internationally ignored song stylist', Hedwig Schmidt, featuring the vocal talents of her stifled frontman/husband Yitzhak, and the other bandmembers of "The Angry Inch." Bitterly tailing the success of her former collaborator and lover, Tommy Gnosis, Hedwig muses over her life's story in concert, illustrating her childhood in East Berlin, her immigration to the U.S., and a series of botched love-affairs, all the while reckoning with her evolving gender identity.
For this COVID-era adaptation, a number of ensemble-building gatherings will take place over winter break, involving script analysis, soundtrack dance parties, and other dramaturgical exercises around costumes, character, and movement. Hybrid rehearsals will begin in February and will culminate in a theatrical performance recorded over the course of multiple, low-scale film shoots tentatively located in the theatre spaces of Emily Dickinson Hall. The editing process will be streamlined so a draft of the film will be available for audiences near the end of the spring semester.
While we've already begun outreach, at this moment, there are many design and production areas still open for students to take on! They include:
