The snow may be melting here in the valley, but 30 minutes west in the Berkshire foothills town of Goshen, there is still great snow for cross country skiing this weekend.
Ski the scenic woods and lakes of DAR State Forest, established in 1929 when the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) donated 1,020 acres to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Moose, bear and beaver are common visitors to Upper Highland Lake and the nearby wetland. DAR offers 15 miles of trails for all experience levels, including a Fire Tower with a great mountain view.
Beginners new to cross country skiing are welcome. OPRA will provide skis, boots, poles and our instructors will teach you the basics to enjoy a day cross country skiing.
Bring lunch and a snack, and two liters of water in your daypack. Wear wool or synthetic underwear top and bottom, wool or warm synthetic socks, a winter hat and gloves, pants, jacket or shell and layers. Meet at RCC at 9 AM, and plan to return to campus by 4 PM.
COVID Note: Due to the 30 minute drive from campus, all participants who choose to ride to our hike location in our shared OPRA van (with COVID precautions) will be considered a 'close contact' for purposes of contact tracing.
