The 47th Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics is underway
43 talented and highly motivated high school students from 14 states and 5 countries will spend 6 weeks actively exploring mathematics typically encountered by upper level college math majors. Except for the founder/director (David C.) Kelly the 9 faculty members live in Enfied and join students for meals and recreational activities.
HCSSiM is Hampshire's oldest program and shares the College's philosophy, mission, and methods: math as a way of thinking rather than a collection of results, student-directed studies, narrative evaluations, residential learning centers,... . Initially supported as a Young Scholars program by the National Science Foundation, HCSSiM has always generated its own funding; and it was, in some summers, the only visible source of income to the College.
Visitors, including Admissions tours, prospective stiudents and their families, and presidential candidates are welcome to observe or to join our activities. Workshops (8:30 to 12:30, M-S) and (sometimes exuberant) evening problem sessions (7:17 to 10:17 pm, M-F) meet on the 3rd floor of Cole Science Center; and the 5pm, M-F, Prime Time Theorems (many gjven by guest speakers) happen in the Recital Hall of the Music and Dance Building.
HCSSiM students return to their high schools as enthusiastic and knowledgeable ambassadors for the College. HCSSiM alums include MacArthur Fellows, US Congressmen, The Simpsons authors, early Google and biotech people, Microsoft Word creators, and hundreds of college professors; they are proud of having been at Hampshire. The HCSSiM community remains cohesive and loyal, and continues to have a significant impact on mathematics and mathematics education.
