Enemies of the State: Immigration Control, Mass Incarceration, and the Fight Back

Kelly Lytle Hernández is a professor of History and African American Studies as well as Director of the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA. She is the research lead for Million Dollar Hoods, which maps how much is spent on incarceration per neighborhood in Los Angeles County. She is also the author of the award-winning book, Migra! A History of the U.S. Border Patrol (University of California Press, 2010) and recently published, City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles (University of North Carolina Press, 2017).

Fahd Ahmed is a grassroots organizer on the issues of racial profiling, immigrant justice, police accountability, national security, and educational justice over the last 17 years.  He is the Executive Director of DRUM-Desis Rising Up & Moving of New York City (http://www.drumnyc.org) where he has served in various capacities since 2000. DRUM has mobilized and built the leadership of thousands of low-income, South Asian immigrants to lead social and policy change that impacts their own lives- from immigrant rights to education reform, civil rights, and worker’s justice.

Then on Friday, November 10, 2017 from 10:00-12:00 in the FPH Main Lecture Hall, please join an activist panel continuing the conversation, entitled Resisting State Power and State Violence, Defending our Communities and Our Lives.

The Eqbal Committee has invited to the panel representatives from Movimiento Cosecha (a movement of undocumented immigrant youth that propelled the recent protests in defense of DACA in Washington DC), BAJI (Black Alliance for Just Immigration) in New York; and the local Pioneer Valley Workers Center.
