The Other September 11th:
Commemorating the Coup in Chile
September 11, 1973
On September 11, 1973, the Chilean armed forces, supported by the United States, murdered democratically-elected president, Salvador Allende and initiated a brutal 17 year dictatorship under General Agusto Pinochet.
A talk about the coup, why it happened, and what it signified for the future of Chile and beyond. As well as a brief update on recent events, including the “explosion” of 2019, the election of Gabriel Boric, a former student movement leader, and the defeat of the new Constitution.
Film, Machuca, Set in Santiago during the months leading up to the 1973 coup, the film tells the story of two boys who attend an upper-class elementary school: Gonzalo Infante – who belongs to a rich family with a European background – and Pedro Machuca – who is poor and comes from an indigenous background. It is a story of politics becoming inseparable from the personal.
