Come join a discussion upon Seed Work, rooted in the how's but exploring the why's.
Often the arc of humankind is measured in the rise and fall of dynasties, when in truth our species daily, monthly and millennial lives were (and still are) dictated by the foods we ate. How a food way comes into and evolves within a culture is predicated upon how we engage that plant or animal in care and ongoing reproduction. Seed Saving and Plant Breeding are the art and craft of that engagement with plants, rooted in peasant, indigenous agriculture in an almost unbroken and unregulated chain of human hands.
Heron Breen (he/they), once a Hampshire College student, spent 20+ years working at Fedco Seeds in Maine as well as doing independent Seed Work on various isolation plots in Central Maine. Now fully focused on independent Seed Work, Heron stewards many heirloom and classic vegetable varieties as well as applying breeding to various crops. Heron feels this is work and knowledge is for all people to take part in, and that our community skills and collaborations with plants and animals and each other are as equally extinct or endangered as the rare plants and animals themselves.
