Neurodiversity, Affirmation, and Solidarity — With Dr. August Stockwell
The neurodiversity movement calls for an understanding of neurological differences as natural variation within the human species. It advocates for the social acceptance of people with non-neurotypical diagnoses, experiences, and behaviors—a shift away from a medical model that views neurological differences as disorders or disease.
Challenging ableism and learning about different types of neurodivergence are important to creating a neurodiversity-affirming world. But what does it look like to put neurodiversity affirmation into practice in our daily lives? Based on collaboration with neurodivergent community members in the Chicago area, Dr. Stockwell will share examples of neurodiversity-affirming approaches to designing physical environments, providing services and supports, and building authentic and supportive relationships. They will also discuss the importance of solidarity among neurodivergent people, particularly in the current moment of attacks on BIPOC and trans/queer people.
This event is being held as part of Hampshire College's CSI 250 course, "Autism & Neurodivergence." We particularly welcome self-identified autistic and neurodivergent people (including Hampshire and Five College students and community members) to join us for this presentation. The building has an elevator, and the room is wheelchair accessible.
