Join Juan Haró from Movement for Justice in El Barrio for a workshop on the Politics of Listening! Followed by a dinner and birthday party celebrating the 34th anniversary of the founding of the EZLN in Mexico.

Movement for Justice in El Barrio:
“Movement for Justice in El Barrio is an immigrant-led, grassroots organization fighting for justice in East Harlem, New York. Movement was founded to fight against a voracious trend towards gentrification that is devouring affordable housing and displacing low-income families from their homes.
Members practice collective decision-making and democracy at regularly-held leadership meetings and deepen their political analysis through discussions of the root causes of injustice.
Movement requires the community to set the direction of the organization through participatory democracy and was named the "Best Power to the People Movement in NYC" by the Village Voice.”

The Politics of Listening; Fighting for justice with marginalized people, l@s de abajo, to transform the world:
"Why is it important to take leadership from marginalized people – immigrants, indigenous peoples, people of color, women, LGBTQI folks, l@s de abajo – when organizing in our communities? Participants learn firsthand about the intersectional organizing of immigrant-, women- and POC-led Movement for Justice in El Barrio.

Attendees learn about the Zapatistas’ listening tour of Mexico where they traveled to communities across the country and centered the voices of the most affected people as part of the first phase in organizing a national grassroots movement of those from below. Participants reflect on following the lead of l@s de abajo in organizing for justice and confronting multiple forms of oppression – sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, others – in communities and on campuses. Individuals derive concrete lessons by reflecting on the Zapatistas’ practice – through film, the written word, and discussion – and develop tools and a collection of best practices to incorporate in their organizing for social justice.

The workshop facilitator from Movement for Justice in El Barrio will share ways in which this immigrant women-led organization for housing and gender justice in East Harlem centers and follows the lead of l@s de abajo, inspired by the Zapatistas."
