Contra Dance in the Red Barn on Wednesday Night!

Warning message

Hampshire users: Log in for increased access.

You are warmly invited to join us for our last contra dance of 2024!

Come dance with us in the Red Barn this Wednesday, December 4th, from 7pm-10pm. Students, staff, faculty and community members are all welcome! There will be a beginners' lesson at 7pm, and the dance will start in earnest afterwards. The beginners lesson is highly recommended if you have never been to a contra dance before or want a refresher! We will have short breaks between dances and a longer break around 9pm with Insomnia Cookies! You can come to dance, listen to the music, hang out, or any combination of those things!

We will be joined by the incredible Liz Nelson as caller and treated to beautiful music from Jess Newman and Mark Price of Cojiro (hear them play here)! You can find our event on HampEngage here and on Facebook here.

Contra dancing is a social folk dance, something like a combination of swing dancing, line dancing and square dancing. We have a fantastic live band, and all dances are taught, so no experience is required whatsoever. The dance is highly adaptable to your energy, ability and interest - if you can go in a circle, you can contra dance! You can come on your own or with friends, and people usually dance with everyone rather than with one partner. To see an example of contra dancing, check out this video from the Flurry Festival, one of the largest contra dance weekends in the country.

The Red Barn is a short walk or drive from the center of campus, next to the Health Services buidling. The main entrance is step-free, and single stall restrooms are on the first floor and gender-neutral multi-stall bathrooms are down a flight of stairs. It is going to be very cold and probably icy on Wednesday night, but be sure to wear clothes you can move in without overheating! Water is provided, please bring a water bottle to refill. Masks are required and provided.

Reach out to me (Finn) at fmf21@hampshire.edu if you have any questions or concerns, and hope to see you there!
