Neurotechnologies have given us new ways to enhance our own cognitive functioning. Neuro-enhancements are interventions aimed at improving the typical functioning of cognitive processes, such as memory or executive functions. However, our ability to enhance is in danger of outpacing our consideration of whether we ought to enhance. What are some of the ethical concerns that arise from enhancement? How might neuro-enhancement affect our sense of ourselves and our achievements? How might access to enhancement neurotechnologies affect the wider culture - in the short and longer term? Do new neuroenhancement technologies raise unique ethical concerns or are they no different ethically from other forms of neuro-enhancement such as coffee? This week, Hampshire Associate Professor of Philosophy, Laura Sizer, will help us explore the ethical considerations raised by new neuro-enhancement technologies.
