Lunch Talk with Will Colón, 05F: What Does it Take to be a Freelance Animator?

Is freelancing for me? What does it take? Where are the pitfalls and how can I avoid them?

If you're considering the wild world of freelance animation this talk is for you. Learn about the benefits and mistakes that artists face when starting their own freelance careers. Leave with a new understanding of what it takes to manage client expectations, organize your project structure and set fair and honest pricing.

Will Colón is the co-founder and a Creative at Open Pixel Studios, a majority women-owned and cloud-based animation studio. Will and the Open Pixel team recently completed the Valley Venture Mentors Mentorship Program and he currently serves on the board of the Ad Club of Western Massachusetts.

During his time at Hampshire College, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science with a concentration in Computer Animation and Digital Arts. Will is a James Baldwin Scholarship recipient and was also awarded a grant from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to complete the Hampshire student-made film, Tower 37.

Will has since taught several semesters at Hampshire as an Adjunct Instructor of Computer Animation and has generated creative 2D & 3D animation and post-production for several high profile clients including Disney, Microsoft, Lego, IBM & GE.
