Kavi Ade will open the 9th Annual Five College Queer Gender and Sexuality Conference. Kavindu “Kavi” Ade is a writer, activist, arts educator, and nationally recognized spoken word poet from Philadelphia, PA. While best known for their gender identity poem titled “IT”, Kavi’s work most often bridges the realms of personal and political identity - navigating what it means to be Black, Transgender, Queer, and first generation American all at once. Their poetry shines a light on race, gender, sexuality, street harassment, sexual assault, trans & queer phobia, love, relationships, and more. Through their poetry the world unfolds itself in to moments of cruelty, rage, and grief, but also beauty, wonder, and becoming.

The Five College Queer Gender and Sexuality Conference provides a supportive environment in which to explore a wide range of topic, such as race, genders, sexualities, ability, class, kink, religion, and survival strategies, in a specifically queer context. Presenters include Five College students, faculty, and staff; off-campus educators; and nationally known performers, activists, speakers, and scholars. The conference is meant to be a safer space for engaging, learning, and fostering community.
